2003 - 2005 SCHOOL BUILDINGS

Le Nouveau Jardin, the school we built at Manda, was a wonderful and rewarding project. Windows and the door provide natural lighting for each classroom and the height of the ceiling keeps the rooms cool. Construction of the first six classrooms and an office were completed by December of 2005.

PROJECTS COMPLETED 2004/2005

SCHOLARSHIP FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT

In December 2004, WHISCA cooperated with the Rotary Club's junior branch, the high school Interact Club in Powell River, British Columbia to act as their agent in providing a scholarship for a high school student in Sarh.

Women at the well

2005

WHISCA limited itself to the continuation of its three main projects in 2005: scholarships, school construction, and care of the orphan family. Wells were additional one-time collaborative projects with Rotary Club's junior branch, the Interact Club in Powell River.

Water

Well for Mayo

Interact provided funds for constructing a well in the village of Mayo, near Manda, with WHISCA's help. During the dry season, women had to walk the eight kilometres to and from the river twice a day, carrying more than 15 litres of water in basins on their heads and their babies on their backs. If they made the walk late at night, they often exposed themselves to danger by having to sleep on the river bank. In November 2004, six villagers of Mayo began the daily digging by hand of a 20 metre well. In rotation, the men of the village relieved them. Averaging seven metres a month, they planned to reach their goal by March. The first pails of water were drawn in Mayo from a depth of seven metres in December.

Community

Well for Kemkamba

In cooperation with Interact, WHISCA provided additional funds for a well for the village of Kemkamba, seven kilometres from Manda and four kilometres from the river. The work in Kemkamba could not begin until the services of the local mason could be procured when the Mayo well was completed, the only expense besides the tools and materials.
