early childhood development

The LCRC, with support from WHISCA, works to ensure that everyone in the Lugari district can benefit in some form or another. On January 31st, 2014 the LCRC hosted their third annual Baby Welcoming Feast that is also referred to as the Early Childhood Development Day. This program is intended for mothers of all ages and their children. With an impressive turnout of over 150 participants this year alone, it is easy to see the impact such a program has on the little ones of the community and their families.

Through out the day various speakers educate mothers on the importance of child literacy and child safety where the importance of reading and storytelling as well as the characteristics of good caretakers are reviewed respectively. The puts a lot of emphasis on proper child health including immunizations, vaccinations and food and nutrition knowledge. In fact, in attendance last year was Doctor Eunice Chebet from the Lugari District Hospital who encouraged mothers to participate in the community health initiatives. She also addressed the idea of starting an small enterprise as a way of providing for their families.

The LCRC opened their library facility and invited the children to read and explore the books. They are currently working on arranging a mother-baby reading time through out the program to encourage further child literacy. Participants posed for pictures and the children received gifts at the end of the very informative day.

The LCRC and WHISCA understand the need for mother and child support and will continue to educate families and bring communities together to build a stronger, wiser future for the children of Lugari.
