Giving girls the tools they need to achieve their education and career goals, empowering them to break cycles of poverty, violence, and abuse.

We can’t be what we can’t see

Dream It Be It, Dream It Be It!!

The DIBI Curriculum

The information is presented in 1 day, spread over 7 sessions, plus a career fair. A taster of what’s included in sessions 1-7 and the career fair:

1. Discovering Your Dreams

Think of a woman they admire and why -starting the girls thinking about which values may be important to them. Write a letter to their future selves on who/where/what they want to be in 1 year and 10 years time.

2. Exploring Careers

Dive deeper into creating their own values and how knowing their values can help guide them to choosing a fulfilling career.

Career Fair

Each year the girls answer the question “What do you want to be?” with the same responses; lawyer, doctor, teacher, accountant. They aren’t aware of any other options, (you can’t be what you can’t see). Using our guest speakers and Soroptimists we create multiple career stations that the girls rotate through to learn about many different career options (they didn’t know existed) plus ask questions.

3. Creating Achievable Goals

Create themselves a SMART goal (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, timebound) based on their goal career from the previous sessions.

4. Rising Above Obstacles

Play a stand up sit down game using everyday challenges (eg. have you been late to class? have you been bullied? etc) then group discussions on thoughts/feelings on seeing their peers with the same issues. Consider some obstacles to their chosen career.

5. Turning Failure into Success

Play a simple game that is designed to fail, then discuss thoughts/feelings about the failure. The Kenyan culture does not accept failure, they are taught to hide it. As we know, everyone fails at some point, so this session is extra important to help the girls learn how to continue thriving after failure.

6. Balancing Your Stress

Almost all the girls reported stress as a big component of their lives. This session worked through several suggestions (physical and/or mental exercises) to help handle stress.

7. Putting Dreams into Action

This is where is it all comes together, cumulating in setting SMART goals, to be worked on over the next year, starting them on their path to their 1 and 10 years goals. Listing a dream team that will help them be accountable and/or help remove a road blocks, Sharing within their groups:

  • one action step

  • one obstacle

  • one strategy

  • the name one person who will support you in carrying out your personal plan.
